Workflow
How to generate a color palette from an image
Choose a photo, logo, screenshot, product image, or illustration. The browser reads the visible pixels and ranks frequently occurring color groups, then removes near-duplicates so the result is easier to scan.
Select any swatch to inspect the same color in HEX, RGB, HSL, and HSB. You can also point at the source image when an automatically detected shade needs a more precise pixel sample.
1. Open an image
Use a JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF, or BMP file stored on your device.
2. Review the palette
Compare up to eight dominant, visually distinct swatches.
3. Copy or download
Copy an individual color value or save the palette as a PNG reference.
Method
What a dominant color palette represents
A dominant palette summarizes repeated pixel colors; it is not a promise that every accent in an image will appear. Small details may be less frequent than a large background, while gradients and compressed photos can contain thousands of closely related shades.
For a brand asset with exact flat colors, confirm important swatches by clicking the original pixels. For photographs, use the generated palette as a starting point and adjust contrast or saturation for the final design context.
Use cases
Useful ways to reuse an image color palette
Designers can turn a mood board into candidate design tokens, developers can match interface colors to an approved visual, and creators can keep thumbnails or social graphics visually consistent with a source photo.
A compact palette also makes review easier. Save the downloaded strip beside the original asset, then document which shade is intended for backgrounds, text, accents, borders, and interactive states.
Privacy
Palette extraction stays in your browser
The selected file is decoded with browser APIs and drawn to a local canvas for sampling. The tool does not send the image to an application server, which is useful for unreleased designs and internal screenshots.
Closing or refreshing the page clears the current workspace. Download the palette or copy the values you need before leaving the page.
FAQ
Color palette generator questions
How many colors does the image palette generator extract?+
It returns up to eight dominant, distinct colors. Images with very few unique shades can produce a shorter palette.
Can I copy HEX colors from the palette?+
Yes. Choose a palette swatch and use the color detail panel to copy HEX, RGB, HSL, or HSB.
Why is a small accent color missing?+
The automatic palette favors frequent color groups. Click the accent directly in the image when you need the exact pixel color.
Is my image uploaded?+
No. Image decoding, sampling, palette generation, and export happen locally in the browser.
